Unity Unlimited, Inc. proudly announces Opals Walk for Freedom in Fort Worth. Thousands will celebrate Juneteenth both virtually and physically by walking together on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at 9:00 AM CST to symbolize unity. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, thanks in part to the relentless advocacy of Dr. Opal Lee, who walked miles across the U.S. to spread awareness of Juneteenths significance.
Fort Worth Independent School Districts Farrington Field is the stage for a powerful day of remembrance, unity, and celebration. The day begins with pre-walk activities, including an exciting warm up lead by Donna Richardson Joyner, International Fitness/Wellness Expert, leading into the main event that goes throughout the Cultural District. After the walk, the community will come together for a vibrant gathering featuring inspiring speeches, cultural performancesincluding music and storytellingand showcases from both local talents and nationally recognized artists.
Juneteenth is a national holiday that represents the triumph of freedom and the enduring pursuit of equality, and it needs to celebrate it all across this country not just in Texas because freedom is for everybody, explained Dione Sims, Founder of Unity Unlimited who engineered the original Opals Walk to DC with her grandmother that started the movement we have today. Their national and international support for Juneteenth is supported by walks in Los Angeles, CA, by San Fernando Valley Juneteenth, and in Tokyo, hosted by Legacy Foundation Japan.

About Dr. Opal Lee
Dr. Opal Lee, known as the Grandmother of Juneteenth, is a retired educator and activist who played a key role in making Juneteenth a federal holiday. Born in 1926 in Texas, she dedicated her life to education and community service, co-founding the Tarrant County Black Historical and Genealogical Society. At 89, she began a walking campaign to Washington, D.C., raising awareness for Juneteenth, which became a federal holiday in 2021. Her efforts earned her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024, recognizing her lifelong commitment to civil rights and historical preservation.
