Dr. Jose P. Garcia Named Chief of Adult Heart Transplant - Circulatory Support at Memorial Healthcare System

New York City, New York May 28, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - Memorial Healthcare System proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Jose P. Garcia, MD, FACS, FACC, as Chief of Adult Heart Transplant Surgery and Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) at the Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute. A Harvard-educated and fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Garcia brings over 35 years of experience in heart and lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to his new role. 

Dr. Garcia has held leadership positions at esteemed institutions, including Indiana University (Methodist Hospital), Harvard University (Massachusetts General Hospital), and the University of Maryland Medical Center. Throughout his distinguished career, he has performed approximately 300 heart and 400 lung transplants and has personally implanted more than 700 ventricular assist devices (VADs), providing critical support to patients with end-stage heart disease.  

In his new capacity, Dr. Garcia aims to expand Memorial's heart transplant and MCS programs, which were the first in Broward County to offer adult heart transplants and VADs. His focus will be on enhancing patient access to advanced cardiac care and improving outcomes through innovative surgical techniques and comprehensive treatment plans. Memorials Cardiac and Vascular Institute is one of only two facilities in South Florida performing adult heart transplants and is known to deliver excellent outcomes, said Dr. Garcia.
